Dorsal fin high, I,7; anal rays 21-23; pectoral rays I,10-11; gill rakers on first arch 10-11 + 27-30; rakers present on posterior surface of all arches; body elongate; lips thin and ruffled; head narrow and flattened; eye position relatively low, opposite corner of mouth; jaws thin, with fine teeth; a small, narrow patch of conical teeth on each side of palate; bone before base of dorsal fin longer and narrower than in other Cathorops; top barbel reaches as far as dorsal fin, top barbels erected, facing forwards; gill opening restricted to side.

Back and upper side bluish or brown, sometimes with purple sheen, silvery white below; fins dusky, dorsal and caudal with darker margin.

Size: reaches 35 cm.

Inhabits brackish estuaries and fresh water.

Depth: 0-20 m.

Costa Rica and Panama.
