Dorsal rays I,7; anal rays 25-28; pectoral rays I,10; gill rakers on first arch 5-7 + 12-14; rakers on posterior surface of all arches; body elongate; eye large; central groove in top of head in two sections: on snout and behind eye; lips fleshy, but not thick; gill openings restricted, membranes connected to throat midline; teeth at front of top jaw in a continuous broad band; palate teeth molariform, in two well-separated small patches (smaller and more widely separated than in other Cathorops); pectoral spine with many strong serrations on inner margin; barbels long.
Charcoal or bluish brown on back, silvery on sides, and white below; fins dusky.
Size: attains 34 cm.
Inhabits brackish bays and river mouths, entering fresh water.
Depth: 0-20 m.
Guatemala to Ecuador.
