Overview

  • yellow stripe before eye
  • top pectoral base - dark blotch
Dorsal rays VII-IX (usually VIII), 22-25; anal rays I or II, 21-24; pectoral rays 19; pored lateral-line scales 80-91; body depth as percent of standard length 23-32 (mean 29); snout profile relatively steep; tail fin with straight edge.

Olive green to bluish grey with silvery sides, a broad yellow stripe in front of eye; a large dark area above pectoral fin axil.

Size: grows to 50 cm.

Inhabits rock and sand bottoms.

Depth: 30-200 m.

Southern California to the Gulf of California to Peru; Cocos, Malpelo and Galapagos.
