Overview

  • c: straight to slightly concave
  • mouth reaches mid-eye, lips thick
Ridge along center of nape from above eye to dorsal fin; body oblong, compressed; operculum with a strong, pointed spine; body relatively deep (~27% of standard length); mouth large (reaches to under center of pupil), with thick fleshy lips; 22 spines on 1st gill arch; dorsal VIII-X (usually IX),23-27 (usually 26); anal II, 23-26; pectoral 18-19; 100-110 (usually 107) lateral line scales; scales extend on head to above front edge of eye; tail bluntly straight to slightly concave.

Light bluey grey, with yellowish tail; inside of pectoral dark.

Size: 39 cm.

Habitat: sand and rubble bottoms.

Depth: 20-40 m.

The Gulf of California to Peru, the Galapagos.
