Dorsal rays VIII + I,10 (rarely 9), 3rd spine longer than 4th; anal rays III,7 (rarely 8); pectoral rays 13-15 (usually 14); total rakers (including rudiments) on first gill arch 22-26 (usually 23-25); lateral-line scales 61-72 (usually 64-67); scales around tail base 18- 21; second and third anal spines about equal in length, nearly reaching to tail fin, second spine thicker than third; pectoral fins much shorter than pelvic fins.
Overall silvery with blackish lateral line; outer 1/3 of pelvic fin usually black; membrane between 2nd and 3rd anal spines blackish.
Size: grows to 55.8 cm.
Inhabits bays, estuaries, and lower reaches of freshwater streams.
Depth: 0-25 m.
Southern Baja and the central Gulf of California to Ecuador.
Closely related to C. pectinatus from the western Atlantic.
