Head profile concave, pronounced hump on nape in adult, dorsal rays VIII + I,9 (occasionally 10), 3rd dorsal spine ~equal to 4th; anal rays III,6 (rarely 5); pectoral rays 15-17 (usually 16); total rakers (including rudiments) on first gill arch 22-24; lateral-line scales 46-52 (usually 48-51); scales around tail base 22-25 (usually 23-24); second anal spine much stouter than third spine and slightly longer, also exceeding longest anal soft ray, almost reaching to tail fin.

Generally silvery with yellowish hue on head; lateral line clear; pectoral, pelvic, and anal fins yellowish; first dorsal fin with black blotch at tip.

Size: attains at least 36 cm.

Inhabits bays, estuaries, and lower reaches of freshwater streams.

Depth: 0-25 m.

El Salvador to Peru.
