Body with alternating dark brown to blackish and pale grey bars; head with oblique pale bands and network of blue and orange spots; adults with large dark patch behind eye. Size: grows to 30.5 cm. Habitat: perhaps the most abundant grouper in the region, inhabits rocky shores. Depth: 1-75 m. Gulf of California to Ecuador, including the Galapagos, Cocos and Malpelo. Attributes Abundance: Common. Cites: Not listed. Climate Zone: North Temperate (Californian Province &/or Northern Gulf of California); Northern Subtropical (Cortez Province + Sinaloan Gap); Northern Tropical (Mexican Province to Nicaragua + Revillagigedos); Equatorial (Costa Rica to Ecuador + Galapagos, Clipperton, Cocos, Malpelo).
