Overview
Main identification features
  • snout short, wide;notch on nape
  • dorsal fin has 28-30 rays, large sail in male, ocellus in female,
  • front roof mouth - no teeth; tongue short
  • pectoral: 14
Dorsal rays XVIII-XX, 28-30; anal rays II, 32-36; pectoral rays 14; body and snout very elongate; lower lips extending beyond snout tip; front of roof of mouth without teeth; tongue short; caudal fin rounded, continuous with dorsal and anal fins in adults; no cirri on nostrils or above eyes; snout short and wide; large fish with a notch separating head and flattened nape; front half of dorsal fin of adult males very tall and sail-like.

Light green or olive, white below, often with greenish midlateral stripe and/or with series of 8-10 dark bars; juvenile and female with a black ocellated spot behind 4th dorsal spine near outer edge of fin; male without spot or ocellus on front of dorsal fin.

Size: attains 7.5 cm.

Inhabits worm tubes on sand-rubble bottoms.

Depth: 5-30 m.

Costa Rica to Colombia, and Isla del Coco.
