Overview
Main identification features
  • dorsal fin has 33-38 rays, female + ocellus
  • male d: rounded sail, black + orange bars
  • front roof mouth with teeth;tongue short
Dorsal rays XVIII-XX, 33-38; anal rays II, 34-36; pectoral rays 12-13; body and snout very elongate; lower lip extending beyond snout tip; tail fin rounded, continuous with dorsal and anal fins in adults; no cirri on nostrils or above eyes; at least a few teeth present on front roof of mouth; tip of tongue not extending forward as far tooth patches on side roof of mouth; first 3 mandibular pores (counting from front of jaw) equally spaced; first half of dorsal fin moderately tall and sail-like in adult males.

Generally light olive to whitish with about 10 narrow greenish bars on side; branchiostegal membrane black; head and anterior part of dorsal fin of males often brownish to black with orange bars; females with black ocellated spot at front of dorsal fin.

Size: reaches 8 cm.

Inhabits worm tubes on sand-rubble bottoms.

Depth: 5-30 m.

Lives in worm tubes on sand and rubble bottoms (Ref. 11482 ). Males are territorial and vigorously defend their worm tube homes. When courting, the male will assume the S-shape position and dart quickly back and forth from their place of shelter. When threatened, it opens its enormous mouth, which significantly increases its apparent size to the invader (Ref. 28023 ).
