CHEILOPOGON
FLYINGFISHES
Pectoral reaches past anal base; no branch of lateral line to origin of pectoral; pelvic fin with origin nearer anal origin than pectoral base, fin long, reaches past anal origin; anal origin under or behind 3rd dorsal ray; 1st (and sometimes 2nd) pectoral ray unbranched; jaws ~equal length, or lower a little longer, top one not protrusible; jaw teeth with 1 point, sometimes with smaller points on sides; juveniles with 2 fused barbels under chin.
A circumglobal, tropical to temperate genus with ~25 species; 6 species (2 Indo-Pacific, 1 Pacific, 1 central and eastern Pacific, and 2 endemic to the eastern Pacific) in our region.
