Body relatively deep (depth <16% of standard length); head short, <22% of standard length; top jaw not protrusible; jaw teeth relatively large, with 1 point, sometimes with smaller points on sides; sides of roof of mouth with teeth; jaws ~equal length, or lower a little longer; juveniles with 2 fused barbels under chin; pelvic origin nearer operculum than base of tail fin, reaches just past anal origin; anal origin under or behind 3rd dorsal ray; pectoral reaches past anal base, 1st ray unbranched; no branch of lateral line to origin of pectoral; 14-16 dorsal rays; 9-10 anal rays, origin under 6th dorsal ray; 33-34 scales in front of dorsal fin.
Red-brown above, silver below; dorsal grey with dark spot in middle; pectorals dark, with numerous small black spots, rear border narrowly clear; anal clear; tail grey-brown; pelvics rays grey, membrane clear.
Size: 33 cm.
Habitat: surface pelagic, around offshore islands.
Depth: 0-5 m.
Indo-Pacific; the Revillagigedos and the Galapagos.
