Dorsal rays VII + I, 10-11, large males with greatly elongate first two dorsal spines; anal rays I, 10; pectoral rays 13-16; body robust; snout profile blunt, somewhat steep; pelvic fins completely separate; head pores absent; scales present only, are 2-13 slightly rough, embedded scales on side of tail base, and 4 enlarged scales on base of caudal fin.
Brown to orange brown with blackish anal fin; base of pectoral fin dark brown; male with light spots on head; chest and belly with black dots.
Size: attains 3.2 cm.
Inhabits sand-rubble bottoms
Depth: 10-45 m.
North and central western Gulf of California.
