Overview
Main identification features
  • head: no pores, many papillae
  • 1st dorsal fin : vii
  • c: rounded
  • pelvics separate
  • scales: only rear ~1/2 body
  • scales large and rough on tail base
CHRIOLEPIS

GOBIES

VII dorsal spines; head without pores; front nostril larger than rear nostril; pelvic fins completely separate, with branched rays; papillae on most parts of head and nape; scales on rear 1/2-2/3 of body only; large rough scales on base of tail fin; scales under 1st dorsal either absent or small & smooth.

A neotropical genus with ~15 species; including at least 8 endemics in our region (plus possibly two undescribed species at the Revillagigedos islands).
