Elongate, somewhat compressed, with long tail base; dorsal profile gently convex at nape, nearly straight over head and snout; head long, compressed; eye large (~17% of head length); snout moderately long, conical; mouth large, at front, oblique, top jaw extends to just behind middle of eye; teeth in 2-3 series, outer ones a little enlarged, without canines; chin with a pair of pores on each side and a hole in the center, without barbels; preopercle weakly serrated; gill rakers short, 22-29 on 1st arch; lateral line slightly arched at front, curving down to mid-body at level of anal fin origin; dorsal fin with deep notch between spiny and soft parts, VIII-IX+I,21-23 rays, spines long, slender; pectoral 16-18 rays, moderately long ( reaching to tip of pelvic), pointed; tail concave, top lobe slightly longer; anal II+8-10, 2nd spine slender, about 2/3 length of longest ray; pelvics inserted a little behind base of pectoral, without a filament; scales small, rough on head, smooth on body, 72-76 along lateral line, 8 rows between lateral line and 1st dorsal spine.

Blue-grey above, silver below; faint lines along scale rows; lining of gill cavity dark; inner base of pectoral dark, inner 1/4 of fin dark grey, outer 3/4 yellow; dorsal grey; tail dark grey, lower border broadly yellow; anal yellow; pelvics pale yellow.

Size: reaches 75 cm.

Habitat: soft bottoms.

Dept: 5-50 m?.

Northern Peru to Chile, plus the Galapagos.
