Elongate, compressed; head and body entirely scaly; chin with two pores at front, 2 more in hole behind them; outer row of teeth on both jaws larger, canines; dorsal fin deeply notched; eye large, ~same length as snout; mouth ends under front edge of eye; preopercle border concave, strongly serrated, teeth at lower border pointing forwards, angle of preopercle with 1 large spine above 2 spines pointing down and back; pectoral fins relatively long, reach past tip of pelvics; dorsal XII, 12; anal III,7, 2nd spine only slightly longer than 3rd; 50 lateral line scales, 7 rows of scales between lateral line and dorsal fin origin.

Body and head silvery grey; faint bars on sides extend below to level of pectoral; spinous dorsal dark grey, all other fins yellowish-grey.

Size: 30 cm.

Habitat: coastal, over soft bottoms.

Depth: 5-40 m?.

Colombia to Peru.
