Dorsal rays X,12-14 (usually 13), last spines longest; anal rays III,12-14 (usually 13); pectoral rays 17-19 (usually 18); lateral-line scales 60-73; scale rows between lateral line and dorsal fin origin 16-20; rakers on first gill arch 23-27; pelvic fins elongate, greatly exceeding head length; bone under front of eye strongly serrated; preopercle without spine.

Crimson to scarlet red to yellowish red, including fins and iris of eye; pelvic fin membranes dusky to blackish.

Size: attains 68 cm.

Habitat: rocky bottoms.

Depth: generally found in deep water (30-400 m), but occasionally to ~30 m, where they can be observed by Scuba divers.

Circumglobal in tropical seas; in the eastern Pacific it ranges from lower Baja and the lower eastern Gulf of California to Peru and Cocos, Malpelo and the Revillagigedos.
