Overview
Main identification features
  • eye - simple cirrus
  • d: low front, notch after spines
  • male: head dark, operculum: 4 white bars
  • female: light + white spots, clear fins
Body relatively long; 1 pair of short (<½ eye diameter) unbranched eye cirri; notch at middle of top lip; dorsal XIX, 10-12, fin low in both sexes; anal II,19-21; pectoral 13-14.

Male: dark body and head; cheek and lower operculum with several oblique alternating white and black bars; dorsal fin mottled, with white front. Female: light body & head; dorsal fin clear.

Size: 3.1 cm.

Habitat: coastal rocky areas, especially on boulders.

Depth: 1-5 m.

Central Mexico to Costa Rica and Cocos.
