Overview
Main identification features
  • eye: 1 cirrus
  • d: notch after spines
  • male: dorsal fin front high; dark + white bars
  • male: black, operculum - ~4 white bars
  • female: lower head - dark bars
Dorsal rays XIX-XXI, 11-13, total dorsal elements 31-33; anal rays II,21-24; pectoral rays 12-14; body elongate and slender; cirrus above eye longer than eye diameter in males, about half eye diameter in females; dorsal fin elevated and sail-like anteriorly in males, uniformly low in females.

Male overall dark brown with yellowish caudal fin, several narrow diagonal white lines across cheek and gill cover; females yellowish white, nearly translucent, with white and brown flecks on side and several brown bars on lower half of head.

Size: grows to 4 cm.

Inhabits mollusc tubes on rocky reefs.

Depth: 1-5 m.

Southern Baja California and the Gulf of California.
