Overview
Main identification features
  • eye: simple cirrus
  • male: brown head
  • male d: 1st 3 spines long, + ocellus
  • female: lines of brown dots under mouth
Dorsal rays XVIII-XIX,12-13, total dorsal elements 31-33; anal rays II,21-22; pectoral rays 13; body elongate and slender; cirrus above eye short and flat in both sexes; third dorsal spine of males elongate, twice as long as following spines; dorsal fin of females low, but first three spines slightly elongate.

Overall semi-translucent with numerous white flecks and brown dashes on side; males with brownish head and ocellus at front of dorsal fin; females with several distinct lines of small brown dots below mouth.

Size: attains 3.5 cm.

Inhabits empty mollusc tubes on rocky reefs.

Depth: 1-9 m.

Southern Baja California and central and southern Gulf of California.
