Oblong; robust; dorsal rays X or XI+I or II,24-27; anal rays II,9-11, second anal spine strong, about three-fourths length of first soft ray, slightly longer than anal fin base;; pored lateral-line scales 45-54; gill rakers on lower limb of first arch 14-17, total rakers 22-26; mouth subterminal, oblique; snout blunt, shorter than eye diameter; 5 pores on chin, the central pair sharing a single opening, no barbel; margin of peropercle smooth to slightly toothed; tail fin straight to slightly rounded; scales rough, except smooth on head and fins.

Mainly silvery with faint stripes or rows of dots along scale rows above lateral line; a dark spot in pectoral fin axil; pelvic and anal fins black; a dark lining behind front teeth of lower jaw.

Maximum size, to about 25 cm.

Inhabits rocky coastal areas.

Depth: 5-13 m.

Southern Baja and the lower eastern Gulf of California to Ecuador and Galapagos.
