CORYPHOPTERUS
GOBIES
With low fleshy crest on nape; usually 1 pore between center of eyes, 1 pair of pores between rear nostrils; papillae on cheek in horizontal rows; snout profile straight; mouth small, relatively horizontal; some teeth enlarged, none on roof of mouth; 1st dorsal fin with VI spines; second with 9-15 rays; anal with 8-13 rays; pelvics fused in disc (in eastern Pacific species); tail fin rounded; body covered with scales; scales large, rough, none on head (in eastern Pacific species).
A tropical to temperate new world genus with about 16 species, occurs in the western Atlantic, the western Indian Ocean and the Pacific; with 2 eastern Pacific species, one of which is endemic to our region.
