Overview
Crepidula species with flat white shells are hard to tell apart, and have thus been grouped into only a few species. In the Atlantic the name applied has been Crepidula plana. But when we look more carefully at development and DNA data it is clear that C. plana only extends to the southern States of the US. Crepidula depressa and C. atrasolea on the other hand are in Florida and along the Gulf coast, but not C. plana. It is almost certain that C. plana is not in the southern hemisphere and the reports of it's occurrence on the West coast of the US need to be confirmed with developmental and DNA data, as there are several very similar native species of flat white Crepidula.
