Overview
Main identification features
  • eye: no cirrusiris: red and black
  • flank - row brown spots + white dashes
  • tail: base white and black, fin cream and black
  • snout dark
Body long and slender; dorsal rays III + XVII + 12 or 13, segmented rays branched except first and last 3-5 rays; anal rays I-II, 25 or 26; pectoral rays 15; pelvic rays separate; lateral line with 19-20 tubed scales followed two rows lower by 17-23 notched scales; total scales in longitudinal series 44-47; eye cirrus absent, but microscopic papillae present on upper rim of eye; scales small, absent on head, breast, belly, and pectoral-fin base.

Pale tan or pinkish;snout dark; iris with red and black bars; body with longitudinal rows of red-brown spots, the spots separated by white dashes along middle of side; a prominent black band, with white anterior border, around base of tail fin.

Size: attains 8.3 cm.

Inhabits rocky shores and steep slopes.

Depth: 3- 40 m.

Western and central eastern Gulf of California.

Biology     Glossary (e.g. epibenthic)

Adults inhabit rocky shores and steep slopes. They feed on tiny invertebrates and algae (Ref. 11482 ). Eggs are hemispherical and covered with numerous sticky threads that anchor them in the algae on the nesting sites (Ref. 240 ). Larvae are planktonic which occur primarily in shallow, nearshore waters (Ref. 94114 ). Minimum depth from Ref. 58018.
