  • head large, spongy;mouth oblique

Body oblong, compressed; head large, cavernous, soft to touch; snout short, pointed; mouth below, oblique, ends under center of eye; chin with small, slender, flexible, pore-less barbel, 2 pairs of pores at base of barbel; preopercle weakly seriated; 23-28 rakers on 1st gill arch; dorsal XI,19-22, spiny part high, 4th spine highest, deep notch between 2 parts; anal 2 weak spines, 2nd ~3/4 length 1st ray, 8-9 rays; pectoral 16-18 rays, reaches past tip of pelvic; tail with blunt angular point; scales large, rough on body, smooth on head, 35-39 on lateral line.

Silvery grey; back and sides with large dark blotches; inside opercle black, visible outside; spiny dorsal with wide black border, rest of fins grey.

Size: 16 cm.

Habitat: demersal on sandy and mud bottoms.

Depth: 20-325 m.

Ecuador to Peru.
