Overview
Main identification features
  • mouth to end eye
  • both sides: scales smooth
  • dorsal and anal fins2-3 black blotches
  • top jaw - large canines
Dorsal rays 89-93; anal rays 70-74; lateral-line scales 92- 98; body depth 2.2-2.3 in standard length; lateral line straight, without arch above pectoral fin; mouth extends under or a little past rear edge of eye; teeth in a single row, top jaw with large canines; gill rakers very short and thick (not longer than broad); scales smooth on both eyed and blind side.

Dark brown with faint indication of lighter cross bars; 2-3 large blackish spots on dorsal and anal fins.

Size: reaches at least 43 cm.

Often caught by trawlers on sand or mud bottoms.

Depth: 1-92 m.

Southern Baja and the Gulf of California to Peru.
