Dorsal rays IX-X + I, 19-22; anal rays II, 8-9; pored lateral-line scales about 54-58; gill rakers long and slender, 8-9 on lower limb of first arch; mouth oblique, lower jaw projecting beyond upper jaw; no pores or barbel on chin; teeth in multiple rows with 1-2 large canines at tip of upper jaw; margin of preopercle without serrations; pectoral fins relatively long, reaching half way to anus; rear margin of tail S-shaped, the middle rays much longer than the others; lateral line arched anteriorly and straight well before level of anus; fins without scales; scales rough on body, smooth on head.

Color mainly silvery, bluish-grey above with black opercle lining; fins clear or whitish; inside mouth yellow.

Size: reaches 120 cm.

Inhabits coastal waters, including estuaries and river mouths.

Depth: 1-50 m.

Southern Baja and the SE Gulf of Mexico to Peru.
