Dorsal rays IX or X + I, 23-27; anal rays II, 10-11; pored lateral-line scales 54-66; gill rakers long and well developed, 13-16 on lower limb, 22-27 total on first arch; mouth oblique, ends before end of eye, lower jaw projecting beyond upper jaw; no pores or barbel on chin; teeth in multiple rows with, 1-2 large canines at tip of upper jaw; margin of preopercle with serrations; pectoral fins reaching slightly beyond tips of depressed pelvic fins; body with routh scales; soft dorsal fin with a scaly sheath covering at least lower half of fin; tail fin squarish or slightly concave; lateral line arched anteriorly and becoming straight near level of soft dorsal fin origin.

Color silvery, blue-grey above with dark dots on scales; tip of chin dusky; lining of opercle dusky; fins yellowish.

Size: reaches at least 70 cm.

Inhabits coastal seas.

Depth: 1-30 m.

Gulf of California.
