Dorsal rays VIII to X+I, 21-24; anal rays II,10-11; pored lateral-line scales 65-75; gill rakers on lower limb of first arch 7-9, total 10-12; mouth oblique, lower jaw projecting beyond upper jaw; no pores or barbel on chin; margin of preopercle without serrations; teeth in multiple rows with 1-2 large canines at tip of upper jaw; upper jaw extends beyond hind margin of eye; pectoral fins short, extending well short of tips of depressed pelvic fins; tail fin slightly concave; head and body scales rough; soft dorsal fin without a scaly sheath or with narrow sheath at base of fin; lateral line arched anteriorly.

Color silvery, blue-grey dorsally; pectoral fin axil dusky; inside of mouth yellow orange; inside operculum dark.

Size: grows to 60 cm.

Inhabits inshore areas, usually off sandy beaches.

Depth: 1-101 m.

Southern California to the Gulf of California.
