Dorsal rays X + I, 25-29; anal rays II,9; pored lateral-line scales 56-61; gill rakers on lower limb of first arch 6-8, total 8-11; mouth oblique, lower jaw projecting beyond upper jaw; at least two, sometimes several tiny pores on tip of chin, no barbel; teeth in 1-3 rows, a pair of large canines at tip of upper jaw; margin of preopercle without serrations; pectoral fins reach beyond tips of depressed pelvic fins; tail fin straight in adult, with central point in young; scales rough on body, smooth on head; soft dorsal fin without a scaly sheath.
Generally silver with brownish wavy streaks on back and sides; pale along lateral line; axil of pectoral fin dark; margin of dorsal fin dusky, other fins yellowish.
Maximum length of 90 cm.
Inhabits shallow coastal waters including estuaries.
Depth: 1-107 m.
Southern Baja and the Gulf of California to northern Peru.
