Dorsal rays VII or VIII+I, 21-23; anal rays II, 9; pored lateral-line scales 51-61; gill rakers on lower limb of first arch 9-10, total 12-16; mouth oblique, ends after eye, lower jaw projecting beyond upper jaw; no pores or barbel on chin; teeth in 1-2 series, a pair of large canines at tip of upper jaw; margin of preopercle without serrations; pectoral fins reach beyond tips of depressed pelvic fins; tail fin angular, the middle rays longest; body scales rough; soft dorsal and anal fin completely or mostly covered with scaly sheath.

Color silvery, greyish on upper back; tip of lower jaw dusky; inside of mouth yellow orange; pectoral axil dark; dorsal and anal fins dusky; tip of tail fin blackish.

Grows to a maximum size of 64 cm.

Inhabits coastal seas, common in shallow areas but not in estuaries.

Depth: 1-30 m.

Southern Baja and the Gulf of California to northern Peru.
