DACTYLOSCOPUS

SAND-STARGAZERS

Head large, flattened above, rounded and narrow at front; eyes on protrusible stalks; both lips with skin flaps; dorsal fin origin on nape, before level of upper corner of operculum; front 3 spines of dorsal fin usually separate from fin and without membranes; lateral line bends down under last dorsal spine.

A neotropical genus with 16 species; in our region there are nine species, all endemics.
