Click on image to enlarge. © Copyright Photographer/SFTEP, 2002 · 0 Dactyloscopus lunaticus 2 thumbnails  •  slide show español Overview Main identification features eyes on stalks, with 1-3 papillae body: 12-15 saddles, 2 stripes c: short, rays branched, no notch under tail base mouth pigmented scales over lateral linearch Head large, flattened above, rounded and narrow at front; both lips with flaps, 6-12 on top lip; eyes on stalks, with 1 to several papillae around each; rear nostril at front of preorbital bone; top lip with 6-12 flaps; dorsal fin origin on nape, with 3 free spines at front, X-XIII, 27-31; anal II, 31-35; pectoral usually 13 rays; lateral line scales 45-47, completely scaled above entire lateral line; no notch under end of tail base; tail fin rays mostly branched, fin short (<12% of standard length). Inside mouth pigmented; head irregularly spotted & flecked with brown; 12-15 dark bars along upper back; side extensively flecked, with 1-2 lateral stripes; fins pale. Size: 8.5 cm Habitat: coastal sandy areas and tide pools. Depth: 5-138 m. Southern Baja and the Gulf of California to Ecuador. Attributes Abundance: Common. Cites: Not listed.
