Head large, flattened above, rounded and narrow at front; both lips with flaps; eyes on short stalks, with 1 papilla; rear nostril at front of preorbital bone; top lip with 6-12 flaps; dorsal fin origin on nape, with 2-4 free spines at front, XII-XIV, 31-33; anal II, 31-35; pectoral usually 13 rays; lateral line scales 49-53, 33-35 on straight section; area above front section of lateral line completely scaled; no notch under end of tail base; tail fin short, rays simple.
Inside mouth unpigmented; head with dark saddles, pale below; nape with bars; 10-11 dark bars along upper back; side with 2 dark stripes; fins pale or mottled with brown.
Size: 10.5 cm.
Habitat: estuaries and coastal sandy areas.
Depth: 1-20 m.
El Salvador to Panama.
