Overview
Main identification features
  • filaments: top head only
  • brown + pale mesh;3 dark saddles top back
  • 2nd dorsal fin : 25-27; anal fin has 24-26 rays
Dorsal rays II + 25-28 (usually 26); anal rays 24-27 (usually 25); pectoral rays 16-18 (usually 17); last dorsal and anal rays separate from caudal fin; head and body scaleless; a sharp venomous spine on upper rear corner of gill cover; hair- like filaments on head and body less numerous than on D. schmitti, generally not present below under-eye canal or below lateral line of body, and extending on back no farther than 2nd-3rd ray of second dorsal fin.

Head and body covered with brown spots with interconnecting network of tan or whitish spaces between them; three relatively large blackish saddles on upper back; anal fin with blackish submarginal stripe.

Size: grows to at least 29 cm.

Inhabits sand and mud bottoms of bays, also occurs in tidepools.

Depth: 1-30 m.

Costa Rica and Panama.
