Click on image to enlarge. © Copyright Roger Steene, 2006 · 0 Diodon hystrix 2 thumbnails  •  slide show español Overview Main identification features fins spotted dorsal and anal finsrounded snout spines less than body spines tail base: 1-2 spines Dorsal rays 14-17; anal rays 14-16; pectoral rays 21-25; 16-20 erectile spines in an approximate row from top of snout to dorsal fin; spines anteriorly at front of head shorter than longest spines posterior to pectoral fins; one or more small spines dorsally on tail base; no barbels on chin. Olive to light grey brown dorsally with small black spots, shading to white ventrally; fins with small black spots. Maximum length, 91 cm. Adults inhabits coral or rocky reefs, juveniles occur in estuaries in our region Depth: 1-135 m. Circumtropical distribution; southern California to the SW and central eastern Gulf of California to Chile and all the oceanic islands. Attributes Abundance: Common. Cites: Not listed.
