Body elongate, moderately compressed; angle of preopercle a bony spur with 2 large central spines that point apart, 1-2 smaller enlarged spines above and below these 2; snout and between eyes scaleless; lateral line complete; scales moderately small, rough; snout fairly blunt, lower jaw projecting slightly; 22-24 rakers on first gill arch; dorsal X,12-13, 4th spine longest, a little longer than longest ray; anal small, III,7, 3rd spine longest; tail deeply concave, upper tip longer; ~53 lateral line scales, 7-8 vertical rows scales on cheek.

Head and back dark reddish brown; a large black blotch on opercle; orange stripe under eye; inside mouth yellow; inner surface of opercle black; side of body with 7-8 rose bars extending down to level of pectoral; large yellow blotch on side of belly; belly yellow along midline; dorsal translucent, thinly mottled with olive and orange, margin red; anal fin yellow ; tail olivaceus, dark margin, large dark blotch on base; pelvics dark olive.

Size: 20 cm.

Habitat: soft bottoms.

Depth: 10-80 m.
