Body elongate, moderately compressed; angle of preopercle a wide, squarish bony spur with 6-12 large spines, much higher than remaining part of upper border of preopercle; much snout and between eyes scaleless; lateral line complete; scales moderately small, rough; head large (~43% of standard length); width of top jawbone < width between eyes; 17-28 rakers on first gill arch; dorsal X,12-13; anal III,8 rays; tail slightly forked; 46-52 lateral line scales, 8-13 vertical rows scales on cheek

Grey brown; body with ~4 double dark bars, 2 horizontal rows of gold speckles; large dark blotch on tail base; yellow stripes on head - eye to top jaw, above top jaw to behind eye to divide into 3 branches to upper, mid and lower cheek; dark blotch on upper opercle; spiny dorsal membranes blue, spine tips orange; soft dorsal pale grey, dark grey band along its base; tail & pelvics yellow to orange; pectoral and anal dusky

Habitat: soft bottoms.

Depth: 15-150 m.

Southern Baja and the lower Gulf of California to Ecuador, and the Galapagos.
