Overview
Main identification features
  • body: 4 double dark bars
  • d: spines 2-4 long, with filaments, black
  • c: 3 thin orange bars
  • preopercle spur: square
Body elongate, moderately compressed; angle of preopercle a bony spur wider than rest of preopercle above, squarish, with 8-13 large spines; snout and between eyes scaleless; lateral line complete; scales moderately small, rough; snout fairly blunt, lower jaw projecting slightly; 22-24 rakers on first gill arch; dorsal X,111-13, 2nd-4th spines long, with black filaments, 2nd spine at least 2X 1st; anal III,6-8; tail slightly concave, upper tip longer; 47-49 lateral line scales, 9-12 vertical rows scales on cheek.

Grey brown above, silvery white below; inside operculum black, visible through side; upper sides with 5-6 squarish dark blotches; prominent large black blotch at base of tail; spiny dorsal with basal orange line, elongate spines black, soft part with 5 oblique orange stripes and thin orange margin; tail with 3 thin vertical orange bars, upper and lower rays red, 3 small black spots with intervening white spots along upper base.

Size: 26 cm.

Habitat: sandy and muddy bottoms.

Depth: 14-160 m.

Central Baja and the Gulf of California to Colombia.
