Overview
Main identification features
  • center body large ocellus
Disc rounded; large electric organ beside each eye; 2 similar sized dorsal fins; tips of dorsal and tail fins rounded; front margin of pelvic fins covered by pectoral fins; nostril of each side divided into two separate holes; teeth entirely enclosed when mouth is closed.

Light brown, usually with profuse leopard-like spotting and diffuse dark cross bars, also a large "bulls-eye" ocellated marking at center of disc; one specimen we collected from Panama was plain brown except for a large black spot at the center of its disc.

Grows to about 25 cm total length.

Inhabits sandy or rubble bottoms.

Depth: 0-94 m.

Southern Baja and the lower 3/4 of the Gulf of California to northern Peru, Malpelo.
