Disc rhomboidal, width ~1.75 length, with concave front edges; snout long, prominent (length ~19% of total length) stiff, with concave sides; 25-35 rows of teeth on top jaw; dorsal fins close together (separated by less than distance between eyes) no tail fin; 3-5 spines on front and top of eye; 1 large solitary spine on mid-nape; middle of back with or without small denticulations; tail with 10-21 thorns from region above origin of pelvic fins rearwards; 1-2 small spines at edge of disc between snout and pectoral.
Grey above, with a few whitish and red-brown blotches, a pair of larger, darker red-brown blotches on each pectoral fin; belly white with grey blotches or grey with white blotches, with dark pores.
Size: to at least 170 cm.
Habitat: on soft bottoms.
Depth: 30-150 m.
Argentina; and (possibly) Ecuador to Chile in the eastern Pacific.
