Overview
Main identification features Body robust and cylindrical; head depressed; 5 gill slits, the last longest, none over pectoral; small spiracle behind eye; teeth similar on both jaws - each with large point and several smaller points; fins short, blunt; 2 small, equal sized dorsal fins, close together near tail; no anal fin; pelvic fins large, near tail; tail very asymmetrical, with poorly developed lower lobe; body densely covered with angular denticles.

Uniform grey-white.

Size: 400 cm.

Habitat: demersal.

Depth: 10-1100 m.

A subtropical to temperate Pacific species; in the eastern Pacific from Oregon to Chile (except the upper 2/3 of the Gulf of California), and Cocos, Malpelo and the Revillagigedos.
