Fangjaw eel, Pacific spoon-nose eel

Tail tip a blunt finless point; body elongate, cylindrical pointed at both ends; tail (tail tip to anus) longer than head and trunk (snout tip to anus); pectoral fins large; dorsal fin origin just behind pectoral fin tips; gill openings relatively elongate, vertical and lateral; snout short, subconical, slightly constricted near tip; eyes small, well forward and high on head; mouth long; teeth very stong and pointed, biserial, largest anteriorly on jaws; teeth also well developed on roof of mouth; posterior nostril in a short tube, before and beneath eye.

Overall tan with numerous small brown spots on back and sides; dorsal fin brown.

Size: grows to at least 140 cm.

Habitat: muddy and sandy bottoms.

Depth: 0-10 m.

Eastern Gulf of California to Ecuador.
