Overview
Main identification features
  • 1 bushy eye cirrus; forehead smooth
  • tail fin + rear dorsal and anal finsclear
  • operculum: large ocellus
Dorsal rays XIX-XXI, 19-21, total dorsal elements 38-42; anal rays II, 24-27; pectoral rays 13-14; spines absent on top of head, but forehead very rough; no longitudinal bony ridges on snout; a single palm-like cirrus above each eye.

Color variable, either entirely dark brown or brownish with 10-12 darker brown bars on side; a large brown ocellated spot on gill cover; distal portions of soft dorsal, caudal, and posterior part of anal fin clear; male with dark lower jaw, female with bars on lower jaw.

Size: reaches 7 cm.

Inhabits mollusc tubes on rocky outcrops in sand-weed areas.

Depth: 1-5 m.

The tip of Baja and the central Gulf of California to Ecuador.
