Overview
Main identification features
  • snout: 2 rows tubercles
  • male: dorsal fin black and orange
  • male: head black, eye red
  • female: pale, white flecks, brown spots
Dorsal rays XX-XXI, 13-14 (total elements 34-35); anal rays II, 21-23; pectoral rays 13; spines absent on top of head; two longitudinal bony ridges on snout broken into distinct tubercles; pelvic fins longer than pectoral fins; spiny dorsal fin strongly elevated and sail-like in males, only first 3 spines elongated in females; 3-5 small flag-like flaps on anterior edge of basal part of first dorsal spine of adult males; membranes between first 4 dorsal spines of males slightly to deeply incised.

Males with dark brown head and lighter brown body, sides with faint brown bars and white flecks; dorsal fin of males black at front, before an area with broad yellow or red zones between diagonal black bands; females generally pale, somewhat translucent with midlateral row of brown spots and numerous white flecks.

Size: attains 4 cm.

Inhabits empty mollusc tubes on sand-rubble bottoms.

Depth: 5-30 m.

Mazatlan, Mexico to Panama.
