Overview
Main identification features
  • snout: 2 serrated ridges
  • male: dorsal fin black and blue
  • male: brown head, red eye and cirrus
  • female: red-brown, back: pale saddles
Dorsal rays XXI-XXII, 15-18, total dorsal elements 37-39; anal rays II, 25-26; pectoral rays 13; spines absent on top of head; two serrated longitudinal bony ridges on snout; pelvic fins longer than pectoral fins; spinous dorsal fin strongly elevated and sail-like in males, low and even in females; males with single, relatively large flag-like flap on anterior edge of first dorsal spine, near base; males with bony flange below eye expanded, overlapping upper lip.

Males brown on head, dark reddish brown on body with faint large dark blotches along middle of side and whitish saddles below base of spinous dorsal fin, eye and cirri red; females reddish with whitish saddles below base of dorsal fin.

Size: grows to 6.5 cm.

Inhabits empty mollusc tubes on sand-rubble bottoms.

Depth: 5-20 m.

Western and central eastern Gulf of California.
