Dorsal and anal fins developed as skin-covered ridges, but clearly evident; rear nostril not tubular, at most with a raised rim; mouth large, lower jaw curved, so that a gap is present and teeth visible when mouth is closed; sharp, canine-like teeth of both jaws in 2-3 rows; pores along upper lip are elongate slits with ruffled margins.
Uniform brown to grey without distinct markings.
Size: reaches 93 cm.
Habitat: rocky bottoms.
Depth: 2-40 m.
Southwest Gulf of California, central Mexico to Peru, and all the offshore islands.
