  • body elongate, oval

ENGRAULIS

ANCHOVIES, ANCHOVETAS

Body elongated, rounded; membrane between gill covers not expanded at rear; third gill arch with rakers on rear surface, 27-45 rakers on lower limb of first gill arch; dorsal fin origin in mid-body; top jaw moderate, reaching at most to front margin of preoperculum, with pointed tip; no large canine teeth.

A circumtropical to warm temperate genus, with 8 species; two temperate eastern Pacific endemics enter the nothern and southern fringes of our region.
