Overview
Main identification features
  • nasal bone: row small spines
  • body: ~5 black bars
  • under eye - dark bar
  • pectoral: base - dark bar, fin - dark bars
Dorsal rays III+XI-XII+7-8, last 4-5 segmented rays branched; anal rays II, 14-15; pectoral rays 15; pelvic rays I, 2; lateral line more or less horizontal; lateral line with 14-15 tubed scales followed two rows lower by a row of about 16 strongly notched scales; total scales in longitudinal series 30-31; a short, broad cirrus above eye; bone bearing nostrils with row of small spines; scales rough except smooth just in front of anus; head scaleless except several scales on upper opercle; scales absent on pectoral-fin base; large scales present inside pectoral base and 1st in lateral line.

Yellowish tan with 5-6 relatively narrow dark bars on side, including intense black bar on tail base; brown bar below eye; a prominent dark brown spot or blotch at base of lower pectoral rays; pectoral fin with narrow dark bars.

Size: reaches 3.8 cm.

Inhabits shallow reefs.

Depth: 1-5 m.

Central Baja to the central Gulf of California to Panama.

Biology     Glossary (e.g. epibenthic)

Adults inhabit shallow reefs and weedy rocky areas. They feed on tiny invertebrates and algae (Ref. 11482 ). Eggs are hemispherical and covered with numerous sticky threads that anchor them in the algae on the nesting sites (Ref. 240 ). Larvae are planktonic which occur primarily in shallow, nearshore waters (Ref. 94114 ).
