Overview
Main identification features
  • head short, pointed; mouth small
  • body height greater than 1/2 sl
  • body and fins dark
  • dark scale margins43-48 lateral line
  • dorsal fin 75-89 anal fin 59-70
Dorsal rays 75-89; anal rays 59-70; pectoral rays 10; body depth 1.7-2.0 in standard length; lateral line straight, without arch above pectoral fin; head short, pointed (20-27% of SL); mouth very small, length of maxillary less than one-third that of head; teeth small, in a single series, concentrated on blind side of upper jaw; 6-10 lower gill rakers; space between eyes very narrow, the ridge over each eye coalesced; lateral line scales 43-48 scales .

Overall dark brown, with narrow black scale margins; median fins dusky blackish; males often with dark pigment on rear half of blind side.

Size: to 22 cm.

Inhabits soft mud and sand bottoms.

Depth: 1-65 m.

Present in both the west Atlantic and eastern Pacific; in our area from central Baja California to the Gulf of California to Peru.
