Synhalonia frater lata Provancher

Male.�Similar to typical frater, but clypeal mark generally smaller, more widely separated from margin of eyes, not much if any indented on each, and leaving lateral and dorsal margin of clypeus narrowly black. Pubescence similar in color, but hair of apex of tergite 2 and that of following segments usually black, changing to brown across apex of tergite 6, but sometimes a white apical band present on tergites 5 and 6. Other characters as in frater.
Female.�Similar to typical frater, but scopal hair of hind legs fulvous brown to black and hair on inner side of hind tarsi dark ferruginous varying to black.
The color of the scopal hair darkens the farther south the species is found, and in specimens from California (subsp. albopilosa) it is always deep black; nevertheless, it is brown in specimens from Eugene, Oregon, and black in Corvallis specimens.

Male.�Agreeing closely with typical frater, but clypeal mark small, rather widely separated from margin of eyes, and with sloping sides, thus leaving upper margin of clypeus more or less broadly black. Pubescence of abdomen almost invariably black beyond tergite 1 except for broad whitish band across middle of tergite 2.
Female.�Like frater lata, with scopal hair of hind legs and hair on inner side of tarsi black, but bands or patches of white hair on tergites 2 to 4 almost always absent.

This is a common species in Illinois. I have often taken the sexes
in copula. I have seen the types of S. frater in the collection of the
American Entomological Society. They are worn and faded specimens.
